Pre-Dental and Pre-Medical Students

Pre-dental and pre-medical students are an important part of every Smiles for Central America team
. Each expedition includes approximately 15 students.

Pre-dental and pre-medical students have opportunities to work with different dentists as they rotate through various positions in the clinic. .

. ...

Areas they may gain valuable experience in
:

  • Diagnostics. Under the close supervision of doctors, students learn about taking x-rays using Nomad hand-held portable x-ray machines.
  • General dentistry. Students get hands-on experience by serving as the assistant to several different dentists throughout the six-day clinic.
  • Endodontics. Students have the opportunity to assist and observe endodontists in root canal treatments.
  • Oral Surgery. Students learn more about oral surgery by observing oral and maxillofacial surgeons remove third molars and other necessary extractions.

NOTE: Students are allowed to assist but only licensed professionals are allowed to give treatment.

 ...
Students also have opportunities to go out on humanitarian service excursions, and participate in community service for orphanages, children's cancer hospitals, maternity hospitals, and families in need.

Smiles for Central America expeditions are a great opportunity for students to gain valuable service experience and build their resumes in preparation for application to dental and medical school.
